HOW TO BE YOU
You don’t have to be funny. Some people are natural comedians, others are not. As a personality trait, comedic ability is often overrated and often overplayed.
Ever go to a party where someone has become the center of attention thanks to their ability to make others laugh? It’s great fun, at first. Eventually people begin to drift away, looking for a change of pace and perhaps some more meaningful conversation. Make a mental list of people you know who tell lots of jokes at social gatherings, then ask yourself if you genuinely like them. Odds are the people you most enjoy spending a lot of time with have more to offer.
Not that wit and cleverness are not a sign of intelligence. They are. But according to veteran journalist Roger Rosenblatt, the trouble with wit is that it is almost always used for slinging insults. People
known for wit, he claims, are invariable also known for a certain coldness and keeping others at a distance. Not the most positive trait in a broadcaster.
It may sound odd but one of the more difficult hurdles to becoming a real pro at broadcasting is learning how to be you. A good start is listing all the things you excel at. Are you a great interviewer? Is
your forté being the warm, friendly type? Can you effortlessly ad lib or do you work best from a script? Once you have listed all your assets, a picture should develop as to what type of on-air personality
you are. When you have figured out what it is you do best - keep doing it! That is the simple path to success.
And once you have figured out the things you do best, your show prep should reflect those strengths. Your daily routine should involve collecting material that fits your personality. When it comes to
selecting a show prep service, there is no sense paying for a joke sheet if humor is simply not your thing.
As a professional broadcaster you can be many things: informative and well informed; thoughtful and thought-provoking; intuitive, empathetic, inquisitive, self-deprecating, personable, sincere … the
possibilities are as endless as the spectrum of human personality. But you don’t have to be funny.
